Sustainability has become one of the most important topics in hospitality and tourism today. Increasingly, both leisure guests and corporate clients consider whether a hotel takes steps to protect the environment and operates responsibly. Le Hotels Group, which manages several four- and five-star hotels in the heart of Prague, has embarked on a path of long-term transformation, and its Majestic Plaza Hotel has recently been awarded the prestigious EU Ecolabel certification.

We spoke with the group’s CEO, Ing. Petr Lžičař, Ph.D., about what this milestone means for the company and for Prague as a destination.

Sustainability is one of the key topics in hospitality today. What does it mean for you in the context of Le Hotels Group?
For us, it is essential. The Ecolabel project was primarily driven by a sense of human responsibility. We wanted to change not only ourselves, but also the perception of our guests, because in daily operations, we see how much unnecessary waste is created.

How would you explain to guests why certifications in sustainability are important and how they affect their stay?
We aim to directly and indirectly appeal to their sense of social responsibility. The notion that “because I pay, I can waste” is misleading. Having a wonderful experience, a good night’s sleep, and great food does not necessarily mean consuming more than you need.

Looking back at the group’s journey, what was the most challenging part of introducing sustainable measures?
Without doubt, the administrative processes. We had to prepare and submit a large amount of documentation, set up detailed internal procedures, and align them across all departments within the hotel.

Which of the measures you have implemented makes the most sense to you personally?
Definitely the use of 100 % renewable energy sources. It’s a step with an immediate impact, and it’s something I feel very good about.

What role does Grandium Hotel Prague play in the group’s overall sustainability strategy?
A very significant one. Grandium is our flagship property with nearly 400 rooms and a large conference center. Every step toward sustainability in a hotel of this size has a major impact, not only on our guests but also on our corporate partners in the MICE sector.

Majestic Plaza Hotel has been awarded EU Ecolabel certification. What does this achievement mean for the group and its position among Prague hotels?
Majestic Plaza is the group’s pilot project for sustainability transformation. The team achieved an excellent result, and I want to thank them—it was not an easy process. The certification also proves that even traditional hotels in Prague’s historic center can be both modern and responsible.

Sustainability is an increasingly important criterion for guests when choosing a hotel. How do you want them to associate the Le Hotels brand with this trend?
Naturally, we want to make use of the marketing potential, because this is truly a prestigious recognition. But above all, we want to be perceived as hotels that combine comfort with responsibility. For us, the key is that we are doing the right thing. Guests who think the same way will find their way to us naturally.

Sustainability is often seen as a long-term commitment. What further plans or innovations is Le Hotels Group preparing in this field?
Our goal is to extend EU Ecolabel certification to other hotels in the group. Next year, Grand Majestic Prague will join the project, followed by Grandior Hotel Prague.

And how do you see the future of sustainability within the group?
Already today, Grand Majestic Prague and Majestic Plaza run on 100% renewable energy. Next year, all of our hotels will follow. I believe sustainability is the only way forward—and it also strengthens Prague’s position as a destination for responsible tourism and international events.

The EU Ecolabel certification for Majestic Plaza Hotel marks an important milestone not only for Le Hotels Group but also for Prague as a destination. It demonstrates that top-quality service, guest comfort, and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. Le Hotels Group further proves that sustainability is not a one-time initiative, but a long-term commitment that is gradually being implemented across all its hotels.
